New fishing vessel “firstborn” of Namibia has arrived

Bernhard Esau, Minister of fisheries has officially named Namibia’s new purpose-built fishing vessel as ‘Oshiveli’ at Walvis Bay.

Oshiveli which means firstborn in Oshiwambo, was built for Tunacor to catch Namibia’s most important three fish species against rough Atlantic Ocean conditions.

Sidney Martin, chairman of Tunacor Group, said “The ship's customised capability to catch three different species of fish (hake, horse mackerel and monk) with just a change of gear made it a unique investment not only to Namibia's fisheries, but also for the Southern African Development Community (Sadc).

“This is the first deep-sea trawler flagged and constructed for Namibian waters, and its technological ability is shown by it being moved by merely a joystick.

“There is no other vessel with this capability in Namibia, and the ability to catch three different species.”
